Year 1/2 - Miss S Owen
Year 1/2 Curriculum
Welcome to SOY1/2. The class teacher is Miss Owen. Mrs Greenwood will also be supporting our learning in class.
Spellings and Homework
Spellings and homework will be given out on Fridays. These have to be returned by Thursday of the next week, when we also have our spelling test.
Your child’s reading book will be changed 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Please make sure that you write a comment in their reading record to show how they are getting on with the book they have been given. This way, we can make sure that your child is reading the book they can understand and enjoy. Please make sure that reading books are in school every day, as your child will read it to an adult at some time throughout the week.
PE is on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has their kit in school on those days. They should wear a white or blue t-shirt, black shorts or jogging bottoms and a pair of trainers or pumps for outdoor sessions.
Autumn 2 Topic – ‘Let’s Pretend!’
This half term we will be learning about things that help us to use our imagination! We are going to explore lots of interesting things about fairy tales and toys. In History, we will learn more about toys from the past, thinking carefully about similarities and differences between toys then and now. Linking to this, in Science, we will find out about everyday materials and which ones are best to make a range of different toys. In our Design and Technology work, we will be researching, designing and making a fabric puppet to help us to retell a well-known fairy tale.
Our R.E. work will help us to understand and appreciate the different celebrations that take place within Christianity and Islam. In PSHE we will begin to think more about how we can celebrate our similarities and differences, sharing ideas about how we can all be a good friend.
In English the children will be reading a range of different fairy tales, focusing on the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We will be use this story to explore characters and dialogue, acting out parts of the story to help us to understand it. We will practise using punctuation such as finger spaces, capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and question marks. We will learn more about conjunctions and how they are used to join our ideas together and make sentences longer. By the end of our unit, we will have taken the original fairy tale and changed parts to make it our own! We will also be using fairy tale characters’ adventures to learn about the features of letters and to write some of our own.
In Reading we are working in groups to share different types of book. We discuss the things we have read and give our thoughts and feelings about each book. We also try hard to answer questions about stories, thinking about how characters are feeling and why things have happened. The children will continue practising their phonics every day in year 1/2 and we learn the high frequency words by heart.
In Maths we will begin the half term by revisiting numbers to 20, and year 2 pupils will practise using numbers up to 100. We will continue adding and subtracting numbers using different equipment and ways of calculating.
We will investigate how the two operations are the inverse of each other by solving missing number problems and carry out lots of reasoning tasks. After that, we will move on to explore different 2D and 3D shapes - naming them, sorting them and looking closely their similarities and differences.
Please come to see us if you’d like to ask any questions about our learning!
