Year 2 - Miss L Hofmann
Year 2 Curriculum
Welcome to LHY2. We hope you’ve all had a lovely summer break and are now ready to start a fresh year, full of energy and enthusiasm. The class teacher is called Miss Hofmann and Miss Zehra will also be supporting the children’s learning in class.
Spellings and Homework
Spellings and homework will be given out on Fridays. These have to be returned by Wednesday of the next week, when we also have our spelling test.
Your child’s reading book will be changed 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Please make sure that you write a comment in their reading record to show how they are getting on with the book they have been given. This way, we can make sure that your child is reading the book they can understand and enjoy. Please make sure that reading books are in school every day, as your child will read it to an adult at some time throughout the week.
PE is on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure that your child has their kit in school on those days. They should wear a white or blue t-shirt, black shorts or jogging bottoms and a pair of trainers or pumps for outdoor sessions.
Autumn 1 Topic – ‘Food Glorious Food’
In our first half term we will be learning about where food comes from and what different foods are eaten in different countries and continents around the world. We will be tasting some of these foods and we will explore why we need to eat food, what foods are best for us and why we need to exercise. We will prepare our own healthy dishes and create fruit and vegetable inspired artwork in the style of famous artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
In English the children will be reading the story book ‘Avocado Baby’ by John Burningham. We will be use this book to learn how to use interesting adjectives, exclamation marks, question marks and speech marks to create our own stories. We will explore some non-fiction texts too, to help us research where different food comes from.
In Reading we are working in groups to share different types of books. We discuss the things we have read and give our thoughts and feelings about each book. We also try hard to answer questions about stories, thinking about how characters are feeling and why things have happened. The children will continue practising their phonics into year 2 and the high frequency words. Most of us will be moving on to learn about the spelling rules, which is the next step after we have mastered all of our sounds.
In Maths we will begin the year by revisiting our knowledge of counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s from any number, forward and backwards. We revisit reading and writing numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words and begin to understand place value using hundreds, tens and ones. Children will learn how to identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations including a number line and compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100. When we have a good understanding of place value we will move on to addition and subtraction paying close attention to number facts and the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
Please come and see me if you any questions. My door is always open.
